According to Maria Sophia Aguirre, an economics professor at Washington DC’s Catholic University of America, families with married parents are not only more beneficial to the overall health and development of the children, they are necessary for good economic development.

Aguirre noted, “the breakdown of the family is a symptom of a sick and weak society.”

Problems of all sorts increase in irregular families: Women are more likely to be abused, kids are more likely to use drugs, and women and children of broken families have a higher probability of living in poverty. …

Giving a review of nations ranging from Canada to Chile, the economist concluded that families are simply better for the economy.

“The breakdown of the family damages the economy and society since human, moral and social capital is reduced and social costs increase,” she explained.

Soon-to-be-former-President George W. Bush has signed a 10-year lease on an 8,000 square foot office in North Dallas not far from his new home in the Preston Hollow neighborhood.

Wouldn’t it be weird to see him in the elevator in the morning? Or would he and his Secret Service agents get their own elevator? Yeah, I can see it now. You’re running late for work, trying to catch the elevator doors before they close, and just as you get close, two Secret Service agents pull their guns on you as the 43rd President of the United States waves goodbye. Awkward.

But here’s my complaint. Dubya’s office is about three miles from his home. Three miles! What kind of commute is that?! I don’t think you’re even legally allowed to live in the Metroplex if you don’t sit through at least two traffic jams a day!

Over the weekend I downloaded the Beta 1 of Windows 7 and finally got around to installing it on a spare laptop yesterday. I’m not going to go into an in-depth review of it here, partly because I don’t have time but also because there are plenty of other tech blogs out there which already have. (Lifehacker is a great place to start.) But I did want to share a few thoughts about it. (More later.)

First, let me get my two biggest gripes out of the way. I don’t like the new taskbar. Period.

What a sweet, sweet ending to the 2008 college football season. After a first half marred by interceptions, penalties, and defective play clocks, the Florida Gators emerged victorious over the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS National Championship game last night. For the Sooners, it’s their fifth straight BCS bowl game loss and their third national championship loss under head coach “Big Game Bob” Stoops and his dandy white visor.

OU’s loss dropped them to No. 6 in the final AP poll behind No. 5 Texas and proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Gators were playing the wrong Big 12 team for the national title.

Move over, BioWillie. Scientists at the University of Nevada at Reno are researching the possibility of converting used coffee grounds into inexpensive biodiesel.

For the study, the team collected leftover grounds of espressos, cappuccinos and other coffee preparations from the Starbucks coffee chain.

Being that the process is not particularly energy intensive, the researchers estimated that biodiesel could be produced for about a dollar a gallon. …

“We have found that biodiesel created from spent coffee grounds is stable over a longer period of time than other forms of biodiesel that have been created from feed stocks such as soy and corn,” Misra said. “Biodiesel from spent coffee grounds is a low-cost ‘green’ form of fuel that shows a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emission. It’s an excellent source for biodiesel.”

As an added bonus, the resulting exhaust smells like — you guessed it — coffee! Finally, a reason to enjoy my morning commute!

OK, time for another cup of joe. Y’know, just saving the planet and all.

I wondered at the beginning of this year’s college football season how accurate EA Sports’ NCAA College Football 09 for the Wii was at predicting the outcomes of the real games. Each week, I played the game as the University of Texas versus their scheduled opponent for the week and then compared that score to the real score.

A few of the Wii scores were fairly close to the actual ones (Florida Atlantic, Rice, Texas A&M) while others were way off (Arkansas, Missouri, Baylor), margins of error probably not too different than what you’d get from ESPN and other “expert” prognosticators.
