A short (but lovingly sweet) list of semi-random (but probably connected to a similar list in an alternate universe) thoughts from last night’s Lost:
- Hurley and Libby finally got their date on the beach. No, I didn’t cry, but that was pretty cool.
- If Lost is ultimately a love story, then that point was certainly hammered home in this episode. Is there such thing as a true soul mate? Yes, absolutely (I’m married to mine).
- There’s probably a lot more that can be said about the importance of love within the context of the show, but just to repeat a point I made last week: the “man of science” would make the argument that love doesn’t really exist, that like any other emotion it’s a product of evolution to help further the survival of our species. But the “man of faith” would argue that love is the basis for our (and the universe’s) very existence, and as such, it drives (or should drive) everything we do. Faith — and love! — wins.
- I guess both the island and the writers were done with Ilana. That will go down as one of the greatest character deaths in TV history, mark my words.
- Does anyone else get the feeling that blowing up the Ajira plane — which probably isn’t even operable — may not be the best strategy? I mean, first of all that still leaves the submarine, but secondly it doesn’t deal with the real problem, which is Smokey himself. You can’t just end the series by blowing up a plane; it has to end with Armageddon.
- That said, I hope Hurley knows what he’s doing by leading the Losties straight to Smokey. I love that he stood up to Richard and is taking charge, but confidence doesn’t always equal wisdom.
- So the “whispers” = Purgatory? Just like with the whole Black-Rock-being-hurled-into-the-middle-of-the-jungle-by-a-big-wave thing, I thought this was kind of a lame explanation. Like the writers are trying hard to tie up as many loose ends as possible but they don’t really have any better ideas.
- Desmond has order number 42 at Mr. Cluck’s. Heh.
- Desmond knows more about “John Locke” than he’s letting on. And probably more than anyone else. I think he really knows what Smokey is at its core. And that’s why he’s not afraid of him. When you really understand that Satan, however evil and powerful he is, has already lost the war, then you no longer have to fear him. Des knows that Smokey won’t win, and Smokey knows that he knows.
- Prediction: Next week, Vincent alerts the Losties that Timmy Desmond is at the bottom of the well.
