Once again, my semi-random thoughts on last night’s Lost:
- First, the biggest moment of the episode: Sun and Jin finally reunited! And it feels so good! And Sun got her voice back! And look, exclamation points!
- Thank you, Sawyer, for confirming that Sayid is in fact a zombie. Although apparently he’s a zombie with a heart. What, you don’t really believe he killed Desmond, do you?
- Speaking of Desmond, wasn’t that well a lot deeper and darker last week?
- So Lapidus was in all those Burt Reynolds movies. Makes so much sense now.
- Claire to Jack: Once Smokey talks to you, you belong to him. The serpent can be pretty convincing, can’t he? Even when we swear we’re not buying into Satan’s lies, we are.
- Smokey admitted that he appeared as Christian Shepherd on the island, but claimed he was only trying to help the castaways find water. Yeah, right. But Christian also appeared to Jack off the island, and that most definitely was not Smokey (since Smokey can’t leave). So was it Jacob? A ghost? A “trapped soul”? Or just an hallucination? Whatever it was, it was likely the same thing as the dead people who visited Hurley on and off the island. My guess, either Jacob or one of his spiritual minions (angels).
- Claire tells Jack she’s loyal to Smokey because he was the only one who didn’t abandon her. And then Jack abadoned her! Again! Nice. Do you treat all your half-sisters that way?
- Still, I have to agree with Sawyer. Claire isn’t exactly the most stable person mentally. Even if they were to get her home, would you really trust her with Aaron? Personally, though, I suspect Claire won’t make it to the end. The producers have confirmed there will be more deaths; I think she’ll be one of them.
- Why would Jack just hop off the side of the boat like that? Yes, I get it. He’s starting to admit his connection with the island. But that was a stupid move on his part. He knew Smokey was waiting for him back on the main island. Not very well planned out, doc. So far, you’re 0 for 2 this episode.
- What does Widmore expect to gain from bombing the island? Surely he knows Smokey can’t be killed with bombs, so are the bombs meant to kill or at least scare his followers? But then, what about Jack, Hurley, and the other “candidates”? Why would Widmore risk killing one of them with his bombs? Either Widmore either doesn’t know (or understand) about their candidacy, or he wants them to be removed. And perhaps that’s his ultimate motive: to remove both Jacob and the Man In Black so he can claim ultimate domination of the island.
- The bomb hitting the shore just after Jack swam back to the island reminded me a lot of the pilot episode. Interesting, though, how the roles were reversed, with Jack the one unable to walk while Locke pulled him to safety.
- Zoe tells Sawyer that his deal with Widmore is off. Is that because of Sayid’s ambush and kidnapping of Desmond? Again, that would seem to indicate that Widmore doesn’t know how “special” Sawyer et al. are. Otherwise, he would either welcome them in with open arms (if he were trying to protect them) or kill them on sight (if he were trying to claim ownership of the island).
- The Sideways storyline is admittedly getting a lot more interesting, seeing how all the characters are coming back together and slowly becoming more aware of the island world. (Exhibit A: Sun freaking out when she saw Locke. “Him!”)
- Everyone suspected that Jack would be the one to operate on Locke, and that was confirmed. Will Sideways Locke be able to walk now?
- Sideways Claire was going to floor number 15. I think the producers are just having fun with the “numbers” at this point.
- A random thought from earlier in the week: Do Jacob and the Man In Black exist in the Sideways world? We know that the island is underwater, but that doesn’t mean the two (representing God and Satan, or good and evil, or free will and determinism — take your pick) don’t exist in some form off the island. I honestly don’t know, and I doubt we’ll see them there since the Sideways storyline doesn’t seem to be heading in that direction. But it’s an interesting question nevertheless.
- And finally, I just have to say how much I’ve always loved Michael Giacchino’s music on Lost. I find myself noticing and appreciating it so much more this season. Lost feels so different than anything else on television, and the music is a big reason why. Sometimes it reminds me of Fantasy Island, and I mean that in a good way. Yes, Fantasy Island was amazingly cheesy, but there were dramatic elements to it as well, and Giacchino’s soundtrack is very reminiscent of that. Feel free to disagree with me, though.
