Life

I spent this past weekend stuck in a hotel room in suburban Milwaukee. Exciting, right? I know, you’re jealous. But trust me, it wasn’t as interesting as it sounds. For one, it was raining and snowing (yes, snowing!) the whole time I was there. Second, it was Milwaukee. Unless you just have an unnatural fondness for Miller Lite or Laverne and Shirley, there’s really no reason to ever go there. I did, however, discover cheese curds, which I’m told are amazing, but to me they just tasted like, well, cheese. Which we have in Texas. Except we call it queso and dip our tortilla chips in it.

Anyway, I had gone up there to move one of our offices, which had to be done over a weekend. I finished up by mid-afternoon on Saturday, but my flight home didn’t leave till Sunday afternoon. So what do you do for 24 hours in suburban Milwaukee while it’s raining and snowing? You sit around in your hotel room trying to figure out how in the world you took such a wrong turn in life. That, and watch movies.

I’m exactly six months in to my year-long commitment to read through the Bible (well, six months plus a week). A couple of months ago, I posted a spreadsheet showing my progress. Below is the latest update. Since January, I’ve finished 1 Samuel and read more in Psalms. I’ve also completed 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, Hosea, Joel, Obadiah, Micah, and Malachi (I like that guy!). I’m currently making my way through 1 Chronicles and Isaiah. I haven’t made any more progress in the New Testament. According to the schedule, I won’t be back in the New Testament until late June.

I’m glad I’ve kept up, but to be honest, it isn’t always the funnest thing to do. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I don’t like reading the Old Testament (it is God’s Word after all). But the historical books can be a little, um, dry, and the prophetic books can be both confusing and rather grim. Unlike the New Testament, it’s hard to see how much of it really applies to our daily lives.

It’s Thursday night, and as I type this, my grandmother’s health is failing rapidly. She’ll be moved to Hospice care in the next day or so, and she’s not expected to survive much longer.

I will no doubt miss her terribly. Her antiquated West Texas slang, her amazing homemade peach cobbler, and even her constant nitpicking and borderline anxiety disorder. She bought me my first Bible (King James Version, naturally) and then threw a fit when I announced one Sunday that I was wearing jeans to church. (The horror!) But as much as I’ll miss her, I can rejoice in the fact that she is a Christian and that she’ll finally be going home to her Lord and Savior.

About a week ago, we finally got around to seeing the animated movie How To Train Your Dragon. It’s a great movie, and the kids loved it. Of course, when it first came out, I couldn’t help but to joke that it looked nothing like the book, that book being Donald Miller’s To Own A Dragon.

Interestingly, though, I think there might be some thematic similarities between the two.

As I mentioned a while back, our church was challenged to read through the Bible in a year, and I’m happy to say that 4 months in, I’ve actually been able to keep up. But of course being the complete dork that I am, I couldn’t do it without a spreadsheet somehow being involved. So here you go.

Each of the boxes represents a chapter, and the shaded ones are those I’ve read to date. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s a start, right? Heck, I should get bonus points just for getting through Leviticus alone!

Thoughts on Genesis

The last four months have just been weird. Ever since I broke my leg in July, things have been off-kilter. Including this blog, I guess. I haven’t been as regular with my blog posts as I’d like to be, but I’m totally fine with that. I don’t need to post something every day or even every week. If you’re really that concerned about my day-to-day happenings, you can follow me on Twitter. Or marry me. Except I’m already married, so that’s probably not an option for most people.

Anyway, I didn’t really have anything in particular to blog about, so I thought I’d throw a bunch of random things into one big post and let you pick out the stuff you’re mildly interested in.
